Ukrainian nationalism: a journey through time and meanings!
“A nation is not just an ethnic group, but also a spiritual community united by common values, culture and historical memory.” (c)
Ukrainian nationalism is a multifaceted phenomenon. Its development has been conditioned by complex historical and political circumstances, including the centuries-long struggle for independence, cultural identity and self-identification of the Ukrainian people.
Nationalism played a key role in shaping Ukrainian political thought, inspiring movements for self-determination and autocracy.
Today, Ukrainian nationalism continues to be an important factor in Ukrainian society, influencing politics, culture, and all spheres of life.
Now, more than ever, it is important to preserve and nurture our Ukrainian identity. This is our shared responsibility to past and future generations.

ABOUT THE COURSE
This course takes you on a fascinating journey through the times and meanings of Ukrainian nationalism. We will explore its origins, evolution, and various manifestations over the centuries. We will dive into discussions about its values, achievements, and contradictions.
The course is devoted to the historical and philosophical understanding of the phenomenon of the nation through the study of the theory and practice of Ukrainian nationalism, a modern political ideology focused on the protection and progress of its own people, country, and civilization.
This topic undoubtedly requires an interdisciplinary approach and recourse to anthropology, ethics, international law, history, sociology, and political science.
The theoretical comprehension and historical study of nationalism is characteristic of the European-American tradition, since it was the civilization of the modern West that gave rise to the phenomenon of the “modern nation” that crystallized in the industrial age on the basis of the “medieval” and “early modern” elite nations of pre-industrial Europe.
Modern European nations have evolved from medieval gens et natio (“clans” and “peoples”) to political nations, each with its own strong ethnic foundation.
In domestic scholarship, the problem of nationalism, especially Ukrainian nationalism, is given a lot of attention, but still not enough, which is why such courses are rare in the Ukrainian education system.
The students are offered a scientifically balanced (without leftist criticism) understanding of Ukrainian nationalism at different stages of its development, at different historical phases of the evolution of our society over the past few centuries, as well as modern interpretations of theoretical achievements, values, directions, and historical variations of nationalism.
In addition, the history of the struggle of Ukrainian nationalists for the realization of the sacred ideals of freedom and prosperity of the country and the nation will be considered.
It will also offer an answer to the question of why, in the thirty-two-year history of modern independent Ukraine, Ukrainian nationalism is only now able to move from the margins of social and political life to the mainstream of the latest program of Ukrainian renewal.
